Fairfield Ludlowe High School Falcons Softball

(YSI - Fairfield, CT) The Falcons will hold its annual softball clinic on March 8, 2008 from 9am-noon at the Roger Ludlowe Middle School gym. The clinic will offer local 6th, 7th and 8th graders the opportunity to learn and reinforce a variety of hitting, running and fielding drills under the watchful eye of Ludlowe High School head coach, Debbie Delahunt. The cost of the clinic is $65 per athlete, and all profits from the clinic will go directly to fund the high school softball team's trip to Florida over spring break to compete against teams from around the USA. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of the girls, especially the athletes who will not go on to compete at the college level. In addition to this clinic, the girls have been very busy in the off season doing a car wash, bowl-a-thon and getting support from local businesses to put in the team program.

Perseverance and Giving Back are two key attributes of being a great student-athlete, and a cornerstone of Lawrence Hsieh's book on leadership for student-athletes.

Parents and coaches can inspire a new generation of student-athletes by posting stories of perseverance and compassion from their own playing days.
It doesn't matter if you or your student-athlete played rec ball or travel ball, was the star on (or was cut from) the high school team, or played any level of college sports (NCAA, Club Sport or Intramural). And the story of perseverance or courage need not relate directly to sports.

Sam Worley - Alpine Skiing

(YSI) Sam Worley is one of the fastest ski racers in New England, consistently placing among the top racers in his J4 (age 12 and under) age group. But the Connecticut racer did something even more remarkable during the Tri-State Championships (February 23-24, 2008) this past weekend. Alpine racers have to ski very fast down a steep and icy course through a series of challenging gates set up by the race organizers. Racers sometimes miss a gate, causing them to be disqualified. As usual, Sam raced terrifically. But when the organizers called his name to receive his medal, Sam strode to the podium and whispered something in the announcer’s ear. Then he quietly left the podium area. It turns out that Sam had voluntarily given up his medal because he had straddled a gate during one of the runs, a sutble mistake even the gatekeepers (on-hill referees) had missed. The stunned audience gave Sam a standing ovation, recognizing his couragous act of good sportsmanship. Congratulations Sam! And see you on the podium.

Fairfield CT Little League Girls Softball - Majors Championship

(YSI) The last seeded Mets capped off an exciting season on Friday, June 15, 2007 by winning the Championship Game of Fairfield Little League Girls Softball, 5-0, over the Red Sox. The winning pitcher was Mets ace and key offensive threat Emily Nelson. Mets highlights of the championship game included a home run to deep left field by catcher and field general Jessica Sedgwick, 3 of 3 hitting by shortstop Delaney Dubois, and a heads up play by 3rd base player Shannon Squier to end the game. The Red Sox were led by outstanding performances by Kitty Caissy, Mary Victor and Meredith McGann.

Significant Mets contributions during the season were also made by 2nd base player Jennifer Hsieh, who was 8 of 13 hitting in 4 games of the semi-final round, home runs by 1st base player Alexandra Zadravec and Emily Nelson, a grand slam by Jessica Sedgwick, as well as outstanding performances by relief pitcher Abbey Maloney,and key hits by Juliana Gagne, Jessica Kelly, Abby Vacheron and Marrissa Roberge. The team was managed by Shaun Squier with the help of coach Chuck Zadravec.
